Starblade arcade1/4/2023 ![]() ![]() Taking on the role of a mercenary you are to pilot the ship 'Starblade' through space, visiting varied and interesting locations en route. Your aim is to locate the Queen of the insect race, Genolyn, and prevent her from breeding further. Earth stands alone in a universe crawling with unpleasant life forms: humanoid insects, the Cephallhydra, are threatening to extinguish the few remaining members of mankind. They could have put more effort in.The year is 3001 and a war of the worlds that once seemed impossible is a terrible reality. It's mildly confusing why full screen wasn't possible though - this doesn't have to be FMV compression, it's polygons, and like Out Of This World polygons done right can give full screen any res without trouble. It probably would have been better full screen even if resolution suffered as a result. If Sega CD Starblade were the only version I had i'd still replay it just maybe without as much enthusiasm. Just like playing Doom on a 386 with the window shrunk down on an already small CRT you lose immersion. The Sega CD port, such as it is, admittedly suffers, perhaps most of all by not being full screen. It's something best experienced only occasionally rather than every day - you could argue that Galaga is "repetitive" because it's just shooting, and the progression of enemies on each screen is the same too yet it at least has more variety and changes more based on what you shoot. The gameplay itself doesn't have terribly high replay value, yet I still replay it for nostalgia because it was an experience I loved at the time. that said it's all polish without much depth being a fixed rail shooter, sort of like the light gun type rail shooter games (Time Crisis) minus the light gun. It made you feel a part of something grand and all you had to do was shoot stuff. Starblade in the arcade was an Experience. do you hate the game Starblade on ALL systems or just the Sega CD port? ![]()
